The Gingham Resurgence!

My Diane von Furstenberg gingham dress

You may have noticed that gingham is making a comeback this Spring. That fresh fabric that was all over J.Crew about a decade ago is now all over Instagram as it enjoys a 2017 resurgence. It is the singular color print and the close-knit checks that make gingham distinctive and full of charm. Not just the preppy standard it was years ago, gingham of today is styled in new and unexpected ways, including shoes and other accessories. Last year, I bought my own gingham dress (Diane von Furstenberg) and what I love is that this dress can be dressed up or down. I have worn it to work, for a family brunch, and plan to wear it to a summer evening party in a few weeks. Give yourself a fresh start to Spring with this ultimate playful fabric.

Get out of the trenches! I’m not buying it!

Why is it that at the onset of spring, everyone starts talking about that quintessential transitional article of clothing: the trench coat? Maybe they work if you are tall, but at 5’4″ I feel that trench coats overpower me. And each time I try one on, hoping to find the magic, I end up saying the same thing: ‘Melissa, get out of the trenches!’ I’m not buying it!

Anyone with me on this?

Fashion Foursome Live!

ImageProxy-1Yesterday, a first: four fashion insiders – Joe Zee – Creative Director, Elle; Rachel Zoe – Designer and Stylist; Ken Downing – Fashion Director, Neiman Marcus and Coco Rocha – Model and Mentor, “The Face” – came together for – Style Talk Live, a Hangout on Air with Google+. They spent 30 minutes answering questions on spring fashion dressing. Beyond the florals and floral trends, people wanted to know what’s trending this spring. According to these fashion influencers, here is the recap

orange is the new neutral and goes with everything; orange handbags are the “it” bag for spring: blues in every shade: black and white graphic prints, especially chic with colorful cobalt blue accessories: big, wide cabana stripes: maxi skirts: gladiator sandals: boy-inspired dressing and the tomboy look will continue to be super chic through the fall: lightweight, warm weather leather, especially bomber jackets …

… and how to dress at the office? Ken:for work, a dress always looks polished … I’m a huge fan of the dress.” Coco Rocha: “I think it’s important for women to show it up, be proud of who you are!” Rachel Zoe: “It’s finding that balance of being very chic, slightly sexy, and strong and powerful … a great tuxedo is impossibly chic at the office.”

This conversation was fun – I hope they come back for more!
