How are you spending your Labor Day?

Optimized-P1050731I took myself out today as the sun was high in the sky and the humidity was low with a soft breeze filling the air; favorite book in hand, I prepared to read  – on this last unofficial day of summer. The feeling was relaxing and warming. I thought to myself, ‘does it get better than this?

How are you spending your Labor Day? Like me, are you squeezing in the last bit of summer sun – wearing a favorite outfit?

I hope you, too, are celebrating in your own way. Happy Labor Day!

The Beauty of Mixing Patterns

LGH_150418_6464Stripes mix so well with a floral or printed skirt … don’t be afraid to try it this spring. You can even mix stripe on stripes, as long as you keep the stripes top and bottom different widths. For instance, if you have a wider stripe on the bottom then keep a skinny stripe on top. The key to mixing stripes with florals and prints and (even more) stripes is to make sure that they share one color in common. Top off with a sleek accessory and you have successfully mastered this casual-yet-chic look.

My striped sweater is getting new life with this printed skirt (for which I searched many months!); in this case, my top and bottom share two colors – black and white.

How do I feel today? Splendid, thank you!

P1040961P1040974I found this dress while on vacation. Which is funny, because when I wear this simple, chic dress by Splendid, it feels summery, yes, but also “un-beachy,” and as sophisticated as any other little black dress I own. How do I feel today? Splendid, thank you!

My pops-of-color accessories? Prabal Gurung-for-Target sandals, and Cole Haan blue handbag (not to mention a NY yellow taxi!).

You’re soon to be the mother-of-a-graduate. What do you do? Pick out your outfit!

My high school graduation outfit

What do I do when I sense change coming? I (like most of us) look for comfort in the places I know, the familiar. For me that is clothing. My clothes are my familiar friends; they bring me back to my expression of self, of who I am. So, upon preparing for the enormous events of my boys’ graduations, what did I do? I figured out what I was going to wear.

The clothes I selected had to be age and weather appropriate. For the middle school graduation (which came first), I chose to wear a colorful, spring skirt by JMcLaughlin, a stylized tee by Ted Baker London, and Vince Camuto nude pumps (great for elongating the leg!). For the high school graduation, I chose to wear my Prabal Gurung for Target dress, shoes, and necklace, which I featured here.

For several months I have been thinking about both my boys’ graduations: Cameron, from middle school, and Eric, from high school. Continue reading

A love letter to Joan Hamburg

At Sardi's - wearing my Prabal Gurung for Target dress

It was just about a year ago (June 5th to be exact), that I won a prize from WOR Radio: a chance for me and a guest to attend a live broadcast of The Joan Hamburg Show from Sardi’s in NYC. It was then, as it is now, just days before the Tony Awards. I brought my mom with me, to watch Joan do her magic as she interviewed her distinguished guests and actors on Broadway. But of course, the highlight for me, was meeting Joan herself. It was a day I will cherish always and I wrote about the experience and the dress I chose to wear, on Turning Fashion Inside Out.

I just heard the news that after 35 years, Joan was let go from WOR Radio. Without any warning and regard. In New York columnist, Cindy Adams’s words,’WOR stands for With Out Respect.’ I so agree and I am quite upset.

Joan, I am thinking of you and wish you well. You have meant so much to me and I look forward to following you on your next adventures. I re-post this feature from last year, with love and gratitude ~ Melissa Kaplan GuarinoContinue reading

“I’m not buying that!”

P1000049 3On February 9th, British designer label, Peter Pilotto, will launch its collection with Target and for once, I won’t be there. Even with a new twist – the collection is simultaneously available on Net-a-Porter – I still won’t be there. I was there for the Missoni for Target launch; I was there for the Prabal Gurung for Target launch; I was there for the Phillip Lim for Target launch; I was even there when Target and Neiman Marcus launched its Holiday Collection. I fought the crowds and the crazy, just to have a chance to own high-end designer originals at a fraction of the price. Was it worth the hassle? I think so, because I love what I own and I know that I could never have afforded these pieces without Target’s prices. But now I would say no. Why? The collection is full of vibrant colors and campy prints, but it’s just too young for me. It’s made for a woman who doesn’t mind wearing crop tops and surf-inspired summery blends. The collaboration is fast-approaching but I prefer to dress my age. “I’m not buying that!”

The Target/Designer mystique

Last Sunday I witnessed another launch of a Target/Designer collaboration, as I had done before. First, two years ago with Missoni, followed by Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung and now … Phillip Lim. And I am asking myself, why? Why did I participate in the crazy, the lines, the waiting, the anticipation and often, the disappointment? Here is what I think …

Pops of color!

IMGP9545IMGP9553-1This season is all about adding pops of color! Find them in nature, find them in fashion; there is a bright world of accents waiting for you. My new favorite color is yellow and celadon (somewhere between a yellow and a green). Another favorite are Prabal Gurung for Target dresses; the one I wore to Sardi’s seen here and this celadon-colored dress, now on clearance for $14!! Paired with a neutral color shoe, my tried-and-true Sigerson Morrison gold wedges, the color pops even more.

By the way, I love mixing old and new; I have owned these shoes for 12 years and am inspired to pull them out of my closet and wear them as often as I can since hearing the news about the talented designers Kari Sigerson and Miranda Morrison. I added red lipstick and the roses of course – and I’m on my way!

Melissa at Sardi’s

At Sardi’s – wearing my Prabal Gurung for Target dress

When I bought my Prabal Gurung for Target dress* I kept the tag on. It was so charming: the tag had boxes for a girl to check – this dress is suitable for first date, the kiss, girl’s night, dinner and a movie, meet the friends, weekend away, meet the parents, the proposal and engagement party … and all I could do was imagine the wonderful life my dress and I would have. Indeed, these are all fabulous reasons to wear this dress but now there is one more box to add to the list: appearance at Joan Hamburg’s “My Big Tony Party and Broadcast at Sardi’s“.

Joan Hamburg is a New York icon: a radio personality on WOR Radio since the 1970s, she is a leader in her field and wonderful in every way, full of integrity and intelligence and wit. My mom introduced me to Joan Hamburg at least twenty years ago and I have been listening to her ever since. So when I had the chance to win tickets to see the taping of Broadway stars at Sardi’s I jumped, dialed the number, spoke with Joan on the radio … and won! The live broadcast did not disappoint: my dress and I watched Joan interview Jane Lynch, Alan Alda, Alan Cumming, Richard Kind, Judith Light, Kathie Lee Gifford, Vanessa Williams, and many more. And then my dress and I met Joan Hamburg which was truly the highlight.

You always remember the clothes you wear for special occasions. That is how they take on a life of their own and keep your dreams alive. On this day my mom and I met Joan Hamburg and I will remember the day and the dress always.

What do you think?
