The passion for fashion comes from the Missoni women.” ~ Angela Missoni

It was the second time I had spent an evening at the 92nd Street Y in NY, in the audience of Fern Mallis’s Fashion Icon Series (the first conversation was an interview with Barney’s Creative Ambassador at Large, Simon Doonan).  Last night, I witnessed a warm and wonderful conversation with the two powerhouse women behind the Italian brand, Missoni: matriarch Rosita, and her daughter, Angela. A fashion icon herself, Fern Mallis, knew what to ask of these remarkable women, in order to tell the true story of Missoni. Here is what I now know:

Rosita Missoni is now 84, born under the sign Scorpio. Rosita met Ottavio Missoni when she was just 16 years old (he was 27) in London; he was an Olympic athlete – track and field. Then, and now, Rosita Missoni follows the signs and is somewhat superstitious. When she saw Ottavia’s number (3-3-1) on his track uniform she knew it was a good sign – 7 was her lucky number. She fell in love with him at Picadilly Circus in London, under the Statue of Eros (cupid) and to this day she wears a cupid necklace around her neck. Rosita grew up reading fashion magazines and says she learned a lot about patterns and style from those magazines.

Angela Missoni is 57, the youngest child of Rosita and Ottavio, and the only girl. She was there for the very first Missoni fashion show in 1965 and has been to every fashion show since. She describes herself as late bloomer and a silent observer, and says that it took her a while to find her path. She always knew she wanted to be a mother at a young age, and had her three children: Margherita, Francesco, and Teresa, before she seriously contemplated joining the family business. A Plaid and Plentiful Target Collaboration with Potential

Adam Lippes for Target Collection

Who is Adam Lippes and why is his Adam Lippes for Target Collaboration a potential fashion favorite? A luxury designer who began his career in fashion at Polo Ralph Lauren and then moved on to Oscar de la Renta as one of the youngest creative directors in the designer fashion world, Mr. Lippes eventually launched his namesake line. Eight seasons in, he is known for his clean lines and wearable pieces. All of which he will bring to the upcoming Target collaboration in stores and at Target.com just in time for fall on September 27.

There have been many Target collaborations and we may be wary of yet another, but there is something about this plaid and plentiful offering that reminds me of the earlier collaboration with fashion megastar, Missoni. Continue reading

Kylie and me

Kylie and me

In today’s podcast, my dear friend, Kylie, and I talk completely off-the-cuff about the connection between fashion and self-esteem. She and I have known each other a long time: we met in New York City’s Upper West Side, had babies together, and are now watching those babies grow and move up on their own. Our lives have been full and hectic. Here is what happens when we are left to our own devices!

You can’t always get what you want but if you try sometimes you just might find a piece of Isabel Marant for H&M

How does that Rolling Stones song go? You can’t always get what you want – You can’t always get what you want – You can’t always get what you want – But if you try sometimes you just might find – You get what you need –

Sit down. I have a story for you. It began a week ago, on November 14th, with the release of Isabel Marant’s Collection For H&M. Actually, that’s not true … it started before that, when I interviewed Emilie-Rose, who told me that Isabel Marant was her favorite French designer, because she is “fashion-forward and innovative.” That conversation set the wheels in motion because at that moment I remembered that Isabel Marant was releasing a Collection in partnership with H&M on November 14th. I have tried several of these collaborations before, with Target – Phillip Lim, Prabal Gurung and Missoni – and have found some wonderful, original pieces, but I have also made a few mistakes and certainly paid the price for them – maybe not physically but certainly emotionally: In the long lines, the manic shoppers and the overall bad karma. I had no idea what this particular collaboration would entail, especially since Isabel Marant is so popular.

But, I decided to give it a try, because, really, when would I ever be able to afford something from Isabel Marant? Continue reading

Family operated iconic brand Missoni turns 60 this year. In this month’s Harper’s Bazaar Christine Whitney speaks to Margherita Maccapani Missoni about growing up in the family Missoni. Margherita shares that she has always been close to her family and spent significant time in her younger years with her grandparents, the founders of Missoni, Ottavio and Rosita. Her grandmother would take her into the Italian countryside to pick wild salad and they would make bouquets of wild flowers for her mother, Angela. Margherita continues to spend close time with her mother and her grandmother, shopping and asking each others’ opinions: “We go to flea markets together, and we pass around magazines and talk about photography and designs. It’s not simply working together, it’s sharing a passion. It doesn’t end when you stop working.” ~ Margherita Maccapani Missoni

Limsanity!

Playing in my 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target BOOM! top

I was there two years ago for the Missoni for Target collaboration. It was a wild scene … women squeezing into kids’ sizes hoping they would fit, people grabbing whatever they could and hoarding the rest, sometimes not even bothering to check sizes, grabbing leftovers from the fitting rooms, and the Target online website crashing with the unexpected influx of orders. All for the name Missoni, because there is no one like Missoni. And yesterday, September 15th, it happened again. This time the designer was 3.1 Phillip Lim and although it may not have been quite as crazy it came very close. The website didn’t crash but certain items sold out quickly, especially the handbags.

When the doors opened at 8:00 there were already people waiting to get in. The handbags went first and you were out of luck by 8:30/9:00 if you wanted one. One would ask, why? Continue reading
