In Search of Chenille

My new light purple Dries Van Noten chenille pants

I get fashion ideas from many places: watching people, passing a window, leafing through magazines, catching a movie. For the ideas that take hold of my imagination and won’t let go, I become a determined woman on a mission! That is what happened when I saw a recent feature on Bloomberg BusinessWeek, “What I Wear To Work.” The person was wearing purple velvet pants designed by Dries Van Noten and I fell in love – with the purple, and with the velvet. I began my search in earnest. I never did find the purple velvet but what I did find was a pair of light purple chenille trousers by the designer, on sale at a terrific price! My heart sang when the pants arrived and were the softest fabric I had ever known! Owning new clothes is much more satisfying when I have to track them down first!

New York Welcomes Fashion Week!

Optimized-MelG8 2Optimized-MelG1 2New York Fashion Week is here! Though it’s really Fashion Month. The shows travel to the major fashion capitals of the world as designers showcase their Fall 2015 collections in hopes of inspiring retailers, buyers, and the fashion industry. But I am inspired by New York Fashion Week in my own way: I love to feel the fashion influence in my life. I am inspired to dress in ways that make me happy and feel the best about myself. Twice a year I end up at New York Fashion Week to say yes to the magic of clothes. Today it’s white jeans paired with black – winter’s best.

Joan Rivers: Beeautiful!

My lady bug bee pin, by Joan Rivers, paired with a tee by Missoni (for you, Joan)

My lady bug bee pin, by Joan Rivers, paired with a tee by Missoni (for you, Joan)

The bee pin, for those of you who don’t know, has been my signature. It represents achieving the impossible, because the bee absolutely cannot fly, cannot get off the ground, the way it’s built; yet it flies, and makes the world beautiful. So, it gives you hope … When people say, ‘give up,’ … no, no, no, no, no … don’t give up, up and at ’em, make the world better.” ~ Joan Rivers speaking on  QVC

I am heartbroken at the loss of Joan Rivers. I celebrate her life today, with my own Joan Rivers signature bee pin from QVC. Thank you for this beautiful, meaningful piece, which I will wear and think of you. And no, I won’t give up, nor say ‘I can’t.’ Rest in peace, Joan.

The table shot from my Senior Prom – that’s me in the middle

So, it’s Prom Week. My high school senior, Eric, is going to his prom in two days; we just picked up his classic black tuxedo. And I, inspired by Man Repeller, as I often am, ask this question for Throwback Thursday: say I was going to the Prom now – what would I wear? The answer is that I do not regret anything about my Senior Prom dress, and I would do most everything the same as I did in 1978. Everything, but one thing. Listen to my podcast to hear what that one thing would be …

Fashion Foursome Live!

ImageProxy-1Yesterday, a first: four fashion insiders – Joe Zee – Creative Director, Elle; Rachel Zoe – Designer and Stylist; Ken Downing – Fashion Director, Neiman Marcus and Coco Rocha – Model and Mentor, “The Face” – came together for – Style Talk Live, a Hangout on Air with Google+. They spent 30 minutes answering questions on spring fashion dressing. Beyond the florals and floral trends, people wanted to know what’s trending this spring. According to these fashion influencers, here is the recap

orange is the new neutral and goes with everything; orange handbags are the “it” bag for spring: blues in every shade: black and white graphic prints, especially chic with colorful cobalt blue accessories: big, wide cabana stripes: maxi skirts: gladiator sandals: boy-inspired dressing and the tomboy look will continue to be super chic through the fall: lightweight, warm weather leather, especially bomber jackets …

… and how to dress at the office? Ken:for work, a dress always looks polished … I’m a huge fan of the dress.” Coco Rocha: “I think it’s important for women to show it up, be proud of who you are!” Rachel Zoe: “It’s finding that balance of being very chic, slightly sexy, and strong and powerful … a great tuxedo is impossibly chic at the office.”

This conversation was fun – I hope they come back for more!
