Athleisure is the hottest thing in the apparel industry and much more than a fad or a passing trend: it is a lifestyle change that is here to stay. Martha Teishner’s piece on CBS Sunday Morning featured news on the rise of the athleisure industry. Says Teishner: “Which brings us to 2015: Americans spent nearly $44 Billion Dollars on so-called ‘active wear’ – up 16% over 2014; meanwhile denim sales have taken a hit, down 5% or more, every year since 2013. Athleisure companies, such as Fabletics, have caught the wave.”
What is it about athleisure that is hitting the American fashion market – especially the women’s market – so hard? Could it be that we are working out more? Or are we simply dressing like we are? Whatever the answer, it is a lifestyle change that is hitting Main Street – and the Runway. And it is here to stay.

“For me the most exciting thing about Fabletics has been making sure we’re designing for every woman and every body type. I want every woman to be able to afford great quality, great fit, and hip styles. With Fabletics we want to create a community, a movement to help you live fit and achieve your passions in life. We believe in you!” ~ Kate Hudson, Co-Founder, Fabletics
Last Friday, October 16, actress Kate Hudson opened a Fabletics boutique at Bridgewater Commons Mall, New Jersey. What started in 2013 as an online shopping community has grown to include five brick-and-mortar stores – the latest opening in New Jersey. Says Hudson, “The success that we’ve had is actually just shocking to all of us.” And now the possibilities are endless. With the help of her brother, Oliver Hudson, Hudson recently launched a men’s component to the line, FL2, and Hudson wants to keep growing: “I want to make some cute active clothes for kids— tracksuits, things that they wear and I think would be good.” She also has her sights on opening more stores and even overseas in Europe.
I love her Fabletics mission and bringing her Southern California vibe to all of us. I believe in you, too, Kate Hudson! I’m buying it!
