Singing the Praises of Norma Kamali

The question isn’t who isn’t going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me?Norma Kamali

You may not know New York City fashion designer, Norma Kamali.  But at 71, she is ever a fashion influencer and inventor, pushing boundaries and bettering the lives of women. Here are some things to know about Norma Kamali – Allow me to sing her praises:

She has been in the fashion business since 1967

She has won awards for fashion, film, interior design, and architecture

She is known for ‘the sleeping bag coat‘ of the 1970s, shoulder pad trends of the 1980s, and her influential swimwear collection (she designed the iconic red one-piece swimsuit worn by Farrah Fawcett)

She loves denim and always has denim in her collections: “It’s American. And I am an American designer.”

She, in fact, is a jeans wearer and prefers jeans to the red carpet

She designed active wear long before it became ‘athleisure’

She created the Stop Objectification Campaign to build awareness of the universal objectification of women and with a goal to “free women of the stigma of those experiences that can take them down emotionally and spiritually, inhibiting their chances for reaching their true potential.”

She is committed to wellness as a lifestyle (something she learned from her mother!) and the power of meditation

Quite simply, Norma Kamali is a woman ahead of her time.

I’ve decided to change the conversation and create a pair of jeans of the same quality for a fraction of the cost.” ~ Giuliana Rancic

I am a big fan of Giuliana Rancic! And I love my denim. Put the two together and what have you got? Quality denim at a truly affordable price. After the successful launch of her G by Giuliana Rancic line on HSN three years ago, Ms. Rancic is now expanding to include denim. Three classic styles – boot cut, skinny, and boyfriend – all at the price of $59.

Denim is a staple in my wardrobe, but I have grown too accustomed to spending more for the best quality. Now I have an option. And you do, too. Thank you for changing this conversation, Giuliana Rancic. I’m buying it!

The Magic of High-Low Dressing

Optimized-91XS-koko0V4fyZOrB_LQsq7_bUSRgNPrClltsgv0XMOptimized-d6aLpyp3hwA-0ECbnLt3rb6txrENLHvgDUbqaaB5x7g-2Here is one of my fashion secrets (I have shared it before but it’s worth mentioning again): I love to mix high-low dressing. What do I mean? I will spend more money on certain clothes and bargain-shop for others, and then mix them together in a blended marriage of high-low dressing. And why do I it? For two reasons: because dressing high-low saves me money and because I can express myself more individually and eclectically. This outfit is a perfect example: I paid a higher price for the jeans and the boots and I saved money on the jacket and the sweater. Denim is an essential part of my wardrobe and something I wear most days. If I purchase a quality pair of jeans I know I can wear them often and they will hold their shape and fit. Continue reading

Wearing jeans could be the most telling thing that we do

Jane Herman Bishop and K, creators of Jean Stories

Jane Herman Bishop and Florence Kane, creators of Jean Stories

If you were to ask me when I get dressed, what clothing feels most like ‘me’ I would always say my jeans. Jeans and a tee is my feel-good outfit: Simple, easy, chic, perfect. I have five pairs, one for each day of the week, as seen in my Five Days of Denim series, but my all-time favorite pair are my Mavi jeans that I bought years ago at my favorite consignment shop. They didn’t have holes, originally; that came with time and love. Now, whenever I put them on I feel happy and free and completely me. That is what wearing jeans does for me and I suspect for you, too. Winter, spring, summer and fall, that is perhaps why jeans are the all-American must-have.

I recently discovered a website, called Jean Stories, created by Jane Herman Bishop and Florence Kane; a site dedicated to denim, including stories of who is wearing it, the various looks of it, and how to buy it. Ms. Bishop and Ms. Kane (who, by the way, share stories of their own favorite pairs of jeans) are storytellers, with a background in and a passion for fashion; Ms. Bishop is the daughter of Ron Herman and grew up selling jeans at the family’s stores and Ms. Kane has a background as a fashion writer. Jeans are in their blood. Together, they are creating a completely fashion-forward concept with denim as the main character. Continue reading

Five Days of Denim: Day three

Five Days of Denim: Day three

In this episode #7, Five Days of Denim, I talk about my experiment styling five pairs of my denim jeans – one for each day. The keys to wearing denim are: a good fit and wearing something that makes you feel comfortable. The size doesn’t matter nor does the brand; the only thing that matters is that you feel good about yourself.

Do you have a favorite pair of jeans?

Five days of denim: Day One

Day One - wearing my Mavi jeans

Day One – wearing my Mavi jeans

I love denim. It is by far my favorite way to dress – a pair of jeans with a tee or a blazer or  sweater feels most like me. Considering how much joy I experience when I try on a cowboy hat or cowboy boots I would have to say that in my heart I am a cowboy. I own five pairs of jeans. Crazy? Well, yes. But I rationalize it by telling myself that I wear different styles for my lifestyle and wardrobe needs. One pair for every day of the week, in fact. So I decided it was time for me to do an experiment: five days of denim. Over the next five days I will wear a different pair of my jeans – and if you pick up a styling tip or two during the week my efforts will have been worth it.

Day One: My favorite jeans are my Mavi distressed boot-leg jean for their ease, comfort and fit. I think boot-leg are the most flattering. Continue reading
