A Pop of Color in a Sea of Black

EILEEN FISHER and COVER GIRL saved me from a sea of black, with pops of color to warm my day. I love wearing black and it’s a staple for sure but it’s also true that I tend to overdue it as the weather cools. It’s about this time of year that I begin to watch the amount of black I wear and the potential for adding to the winter blues. Ever since I interviewed Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone® Color Institute – I am aware more than ever of the psychological impact of color and how wearing color affects our mood. Can wearing color actually make you feel better? In a recent interview, Eiseman said that when other people see someone wearing a bright color, they, too, might feel happier: “It’s interesting that it can start a chain reaction that creates a more positive energy for the person wearing the colors as well as those who observe the color.”

Eiseman also said if you’re feeling like your wardrobe (and your spirit) is a little under-the-weather, the addition of a bright scarf, colorful jewelry, or even vibrant shoes can go a long way. It needn’t be bright color top to toe, either; a little pop of color provides benefit because you know you are wearing color.

Sophie’s Choice

Sophie in her red!

Sophie in her red!

Sophie and I just met, and I am lucky that she will be shooting the images for my blog. Sophie is a gifted photographer, a high school senior, and a blogger. And she and I share a passion for fashion, self expression, and red lipstick! Sophie shared with me her dreams for the future, why she became inspired to express herself the minute she started high school, and why red is her new favorite color

MKG: Were you always interested in fashion and photography?

Sophie: Ever since middle school I have loved the idea of being able to dress anyway I liked. I watched my older sister get ready for high school every morning, envious of her creativity and individuality, as she put an outfit together. When I started high school, I instantly fell in love with creating an outfit, and for the first time I enjoyed going to school, because I felt good in my skin, because I had discovered my personal style. It was then that I realized how much I loved fashion and that I wanted to be involved in the industry in some way. During my sophomore year I took my first photography class, and fell in love with creating pictures and watching film slowly develop.

MKG: What inspired you to start, The Adventures of S? What is your intention for the blog and how long have you been blogging?

SophieI started my blog, The Adventures of S, in 2013, because I felt that I had something unique and inspirational to offer. Through my blog I want to show that you can dress however you like as long as you are always happy with what you do. I also stress the idea that ‘Confidence is Key, with weekly inspirational posts, illustrating that when you are confident anything is possible. Continue reading

How lipstick changed my life …

IMGP0629Of all the tips that came from my closet audit with stylist Kim Naci over a year ago, the most important was this: change my lipstick! And do it now. All these years, I thought I had a knack for choosing the right lipsticks, but as it turns out, I had no idea. Kim changed all that when she introduced me to Cover Girl #355: Tempt Seduction. Not quite a full-on red, it is somewhere between a pink and a red and a perfect match for my skin, which is fair and ivory-toned.

What started as a slow introduction has now become a ritual to which I obsessively rely. I won’t leave the house without it. I once wore this lipstick to feel dressed-up. Now, Tempt Seduction has become my staple for even my most dressed-down days. When I push myself out the door for an 8:30 am exercise class, for example, I will not have on a stitch of makeup. But I wouldn’t think of going without my lipstick. Why, you may ask, is lipstick so essential? I think it has something to do with how it showcases our other best accessory … our smile.

It’s a new day!

Kim, professional stylist with Style for Hire, changed the way I dress and see myself when she came to my house a few weeks ago, and audited my closet. But cleaning out the old is only part of the transformation; tailoring pieces you already own and finding new pieces to build your wardrobe are the second steps. My new finds: a black, a-line skirt (a style that flatters all body types), red lipstick (Cover Girl #355, which Kim told me to imagine as an accessory all its own!), and tall black boots (well, these were not on my formal list, but I did hear you, Kim, when you asked if I owned a pair!). Breaking down my outfit: skirt – Theory; sweater – a Marc Jacobs‘ I have had for years but forgot how to wear; and boots – Sergio Rossi, I found at a super price on sale at a consignment shop, because … who can resist that!?

I am still on the lookout for a camel skirt but I feel energized with what I’ve changed so far! I wish new fashion days for you, too!
