Put a Pin In It!

optimized-2016-10-13-01-16-45-2There were numerous, “I have to have that!” fashion moments watching Sex and the City; sometimes it was Miranda or Charlotte or Samantha, but mostly it was Carrie moments. She was over-the-top, yes, but I related to her fashion-forward style. Her pieces, especially her accessories, were unique and expressive – they identified her persona and character. Certain moments come to mind, especially those of Carrie wearing a series of flower pins. I had my own Carrie Bradshaw moment today when I added a vintage Dolce & Gabbana flower pin to my blazer – just for the fun of it. No one had seen anything like it and I was happy to wear something unique. Don’t be afraid to have a good time with your accessories; they are what set you apart from the crowd. They will give you that edge and confidence to be your most individual self. And that is what clothes do best.

What’s Black and White and Ghoul All Over?

IMG_8154My skull sweater! I couldn’t be happier that it’s October, and I am pulling out my skull sweater! I love my skulls, and although I wear this sweater the entire fall and winter, nothing feels better than wearing it this month. Today, I pair the sweater with black pants, and my first-ever Manolo Blahnik’s that I purchased … where else? At my favorite consignment boutique; on sale, no less. It was a good day. Are you pleased with me, Carrie Bradshaw?

Do you have a favorite October item to get you in the mood for Halloween? Do tell …

I’m buying that!

05-love-quotesWomen’s Health Magazine, inspired by Valentine’s Day, calls out the 12-best love quotes of all-time. This quote, by Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City (aka Sarah Jessica Parker) is my favorite. I remember it well: it was the final scene of the series, and Carrie had returned to New York after Mr. Big (whom we now find out is named John) rescues her from a painful time in Paris and brings her home to New York. Carrie is walking the streets, so happy to be back in her city, with her friends, her love … and herself. Loving yourself, being your best you and finding someone who feels the same way? I’m buying that! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Shoewow!

Shoe Obsession Exhibit at The Museum at FIT

Shoe Obsession Exhibit at The Museum at FIT

Meeting costume designer Alexandra reminded me that there are wonderful opportunities to be inspired by fashion – if you just look for them. The Museum at FIT, in the heart of the New York’s fashion district, is a surprising spot for exhibits, information, showcases  … and inspiration. There are only a few days left to see the exhibit, Shoe Obsession (now through April 13th), and if you have the opportunity – go! It is worth it!

Shoe Obsession features over 150 examples of shoes as showstopping art: from the outrageous to the exquisite and the sublime. The shoes are still visions in my mind long after leaving the museum. There are two that stand out: Maison Martin Margiela’s Glass Slipper (2009) that reminded me of the romance and intrigue of Cinderella, the original fairytale that started it all, and Manolo Blahnik’s silver shoe (2003) that Carrie Bradshaw wore on Sex and The City, in the episode featuring Tatum O’Neal. Carrie loses her shoe at a baby shower hosted by O’Neal and finally gets compensated with new shoes by signing herself up for her very own bridal registry. Of course Carrie wore and coveted countless Manolo Blahnik’s in her life on Sex and the City, but this particular shoe and story was memorable!

The average American woman has about twenty pairs of shoes – nearly double what she owned in the late 1990s,” according to Valerie Steele (director and chief curator) and Colleen Hill (associate curator of accessories) at The Museum at FIT.  Are we obsessed? What do you think?
