Tracy Beckerman has been sharing her musings with us as a writer extraordinaire: originator of the syndicated humor column, LOST IN SUBURBIA®, author of “Lost in Suburbia: A Momoir. How I Got Pregnant, Lost Myself, and Got My Cool Back in the New Jersey Suburbs” and “Rebel without a Minivan: Observations on Life in the ‘Burbs,” contributor to a humor compilation called, “See Mom Run:  Side-Splitting Essays from the World’s Most Harried Moms.” and the new anthology, “Fifty Shades of Funny: Hook ups, Break Ups and Crack Ups” as well as daily blogger. In other words, Tracy Beckerman gives us many opportunities to laugh! Tracy recently found herself on a photo shoot for The Ladies Home Journal and I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to ask Tracy what she learned about herself in the process …

MKG: How did you end up on a photo shoot for The Ladies Home Journal?

TBLadies Home Journal posted a call on their Facebook page for real women to model eyeglasses at every age. They were looking for women 25-65. I wear glasses so I thought, what the heck!

MKG: I picture a scene from Sex and the City, when Carrie enters the Vogue closet. Was it anything like that? Did they have a rack or racks of clothes for you to try?

TB: They did have racks of clothes, but they also encouraged us to bring our own clothes because they wanted us to wear something that really reflected our individual styles. I ended up wearing my own sapphire blue leather moto jacket with a white muscle shirt. It worked great with my short hair. They photographed me with 6 different pair of eyeglasses … all were very different and most were not in a style that I would have picked for myself. But I ended up loving the look of all of them. It was great to work with a professional stylist who could help me break out of my comfort zone and steer me toward options I never would have considered.

MKG: Did you learn something about yourself in the process?

TB: I did learn that I need to take more fashion risks. I’ve gotten into something of a style rut – going for this cool, city-turned-suburban mom look – and I realized I can try different looks without feeling like I compromise my identity. It was really eye-opening (yes, pun intended!).

MKG: When can we see it?

TB: The story will run in the February/March issue!

  1. Tracy, I am a “new found fan!” I read your blogs and you are so funny! I too have my hair cut like yours, so your ladies home journal shots caught my eye. Great glasses, by the way….
