What will you be doing on this last official day of summer? Running your toes through the sand, or relaxing by the pool, or swimming in the lake? I witnessed a wonderful moment of a man sitting on his porch swing – doing absolutely nothing except taking it all in. And I? I will be treating myself to a movie matinée, which is my favorite thing to do. It always feels just a little indulgent during the daytime. I look forward to seeing Woody Allen’s new movie, Blue Jasmine – I hear it’s very good.
I am wearing my white jeans because it’s okay to wear white all-year round and fashion is about making your own rules.
No, I am not referring to the 2000 horror film starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford, although that was a scary-as-hell movie worth seeing. I am referring to undergarments because what lies beneath your clothes is as important as anything else but too often overlooked. The proper-fitting bras and panties bring out the best in you and literally lift your spirits. It was about a year ago that I met Eddy, a smart and savvy salesperson from The Town Shop in NYC who reminded me how important it is to wear the right fitting bra. Today my friend Kim is saving the day with more undergarment advice; this time, it’s panties.
I recently purchased Rachel Zoe’s Jett Wide-Leg Tuxedo Pant white, with a full black stripe on the sides – on sale! I loved its ease and elegance. Sadly though, I was ready to return it because my son told me he could see my underwear from the back. Not good, especially when wearing white. But I wasn’t ready to let go. In a last-ditch effort I called Kim for her expert styling opinion. She was emphatic: keep the pants but find proper panties. She sent me on a mission to find nude, seamless boyshorts (a nude thong would also have worked, depending on your personal preference). My search ended at Nordstrom, when I tried them with the pants and found success!
How sad I would have been if I had given up and simply returned the pants. Reminders to us all that a good foundation is key. What lies beneath matters. You matter. Take care of yourself – under to cover.
My summer ensemble: white jeans/Citizens of Humanity paired with blue halter top/Old Navy
We were three women in white. My cousin Michelle, my mother and me. We had met this week for a mini-family reunion and little did we know that all three of us had chosen to wear white pants with colorful tops. When we showed up for lunch we smiled, through our dark sunglasses of course. Summer arrives and the white pants come out. But it makes sense: it’s fun to go lighter after a season of black and brown and gray. And white pants go with everything and can be dressed up or down. Michelle lives in Florida: like many of us, she saves her white pants for the summer months. But Michelle can always tell a non-native because she can be found wearing white pants in the non-summer months as well. That gives her away!
Bring out your white pants! They say you can now wear white all-year round, but really … there’s nothing like wearing crisp white pants in the summer.
