Wild Horses on the beach of my beloved Outer Banks, North Carolina
Packing for my annual beach vacation with my family has become a process of elimination. And elimination. And elimination. I have come to see that simple and easy-to-unpack are the best ways to go. You end up wearing a few things over and over anyway. Here are my essentials:
– swimsuit and coverup (this year I am taking the plunge and adding pink to my classic black swimwear with my Lisa Curran Swim one-piece
– sunscreen and beach hat (my floppy pink hat has been my beach companion for several years)
– a few pairs of shorts and tees
– one light, longer length pant
– one easy-to-pack sundress
– exercise gear for my long sunset walks
– flip flops, sandals, and a beach bag
That’s it. Don’t fret whatever you are missing – maybe it’s time to treat yourself to a little something in town.

The good news? If you push a little out of your comfort zone there is a swimsuit with your name on it! Here is a part of our discussion:
MKG: How can women feel less panicked when they start the process of buying a swimsuit?
Karie: “It’s a mindset. You can’t have a negative mindset. It’s better to keep an open mind and remember that there is something for every body type. I suggest working with someone who will first answer questions and make recommendations, and then bring the swimsuit(s) home to try on in the comfort of your own environment. Continue reading →
Shopping for a swimsuit is a tricky business. The thought of stripping down and exposing yourself to the harsh lights that laugh at your every dimple is daunting, to say the least. Perhaps that’s why I have hung on to my tried-and-true swimsuits for a few years, even when they are clearly past their prime, preserving them and treating them with great care so that I can avoid the process just one more year. But all the gentle care in the world can’t change the fact that I need a new swimsuit – and fast, because the weather is warming up quickly. Isn’t there another way to shop? …
The answer is: yes! You can shop for a swimsuit online. I have never considered online swimsuit shopping; like many other women I simply braved those harsh fluorescent department store lights and small, cramped dressing rooms – hoping for the best. But this time I wanted to try something different and the thought of shopping in the comfort of my own home was enticing. I also wanted something specific: a swimsuit from the Lisa Curran Swim collection. I met Lisa last fall when I interviewed her and was inspired not only by her personal story but also by her desire to design the highest quality swimwear for women of all shapes and sizes … Continue reading →
