I have a fashion favorite this time of year, when summer has almost faded. It is the blazer – my tried-and-true workhorse. This one item of clothing is all that I need to transition to slightly cooler temps. Light enough to pair with a tee for the warmer afternoons but cover enough to ward off the chill in the brisk mornings and early evenings, the blazer is the one item of clothing that can go with most things and fit with everything. If you don’t have one, start with a classic. You will find yourself grabbing it before you head out the door – guaranteed!
Clothes from my closet – a floral print a-line skirt with neutral pumps
I’m 5/4.5. There was a short period when I reached my full height at thirteen and I thought that I wouldn’t stop growing. But I did. Bottom line: I’m petite. It’s taken me a long time to figure out what I can and cannot wear and what trends will never work for me. In general terms, I think I do best when I keep it simple and uncluttered.
Some tips that work for me:
– keep pants fitted and flat. When Kim came for my closet audit, she recommended that I have a tailor remove the inner pockets of several of my pants and sew them up. It created a more fitted and flattering leg.
– choose a-line dresses and skirts. Skirts with tucked-in shirts and sweaters is a flattering shape and most often I look for knee-length or just above-the-knee. Skirts for petite women are better if they hit at your natural waist … Continue reading →
“You say blazer, I say jacket…tomato … tomAto!A jacket is the gorgeous gift wrap for your outfit … Nothing provides the illusion of an hourglass as quickly as a jacket … Also, you are conveying professionalism without sacrificing the edginess … A jacket enhances the integrity of any outfit … It’s the quickest way to clean up your act, sister!” ~ Kim, professional stylist
Spring is here and it’s the season of the blazer. Actually, every season is the season of the blazer. I’ve mentioned the importance of having a solid go-to blazer before, but somehow this spring, thanks to help from my new friend Kim I am changing the way I utilize my blazers. In other words I am wearing them with everything! They do so much more than help with a morning/evening chill; blazers provide opportunities to add color and give definition and structure that says professional and pulled together. Pair a blazer with your jeans or a soft dress for a relaxed and casual look, or with a slim black or neutral pant for work. Any and all combinations are divine!
In the midst of more dreary winter weather ready to drag me down I found a moment to Spring dream! My new favorite stylist, Stacy London (co-host of TLC’s What Not to Wear, now in its 10th season!), revealed the spring style trends. Illuminating! So let’s talk! …
– white and lace. Flirty and feminine, the combination of white and lace will be big. I have this one covered with my Valentino blazer (it’s white eyelet, actually) that I snatched at my local high-end consignment shop. Find a consignment shop for yourself, if you haven’t already! Go!
– gladiator sandals and ankle-strap sandals. Watch for gladiator sandals, especially, with the designs reaching every length, even up to the knee! Continue reading →
“There is something about a well-fitted modern jacket that feels like armor. If it’s cut well, it adds a dose of cool to anything you wear it with and does the heavy lifting when it comes to creating a flattering shape.” ~ Stacy London – stylist, television personality, and author – from her new book, The Truth About Style
Do you own a blazer? Have you checked your closet recently? Blazers are so important for pulling a look together, and having a few well-fitting jackets, as Stacy London says, is necessary for feeling your best. I like the notion of a jacket as armor and I agree. Sometimes you want to say more rather than less. Sometimes you need the extra coverage; not just to complete a look, but to go deeper – to give you a sense of control and purpose when you need confidence. Sometimes, as your body ages, you simply need a little more structure and form, especially in the shoulders. And nothing, nothing gives a man or woman a sense of power and elegance like a blazer.
The expression ‘go to’ really fits when it comes to wearing a blazer. I have a few; a white and yellow for spring/summer, and my recent purchase – this Luxe Rachel Zoe chocolate-suede from her QVC collection. I chose it because of its good fit and interesting detail, including the puffed-sleeves (love!) and multiple zippers. And brown looks great with black, which makes it a classic for everything.
Take care of yourself and add your own protection with a proper jacket. Be a trail blazer!
